As a trans woman, not many things give me a headache the way the entire concept of passing does. Passing is the idea that if a trans woman (or any person who is presenting as a woman) looks, dresses and acts a certain way, people won’t be able to tell they are anything other than a completely “normal” woman. If you look at online trans communities or forums, you’ll find tons of tips on how to pass better – everything from hair removal tips to workouts to how to walk and sit more femininely.
All of this presupposes that there is only one right way to look like and be a woman. And it’s infuriating. On the one hand, whenever I go out in public or post pictures online, a part of me is deathly afraid that I’ll be insulted or worse. I desperately want to be accepted as the woman I am. On the other hand, I hate that in order to feel safe, I’m expected to fit into the very narrow box that is labeled “woman.” Tips on how to pass always seem to say that you should avoid building muscle mass and avoid wearing clothes and makeup that are too costumey, that you should try to hide your shoulders and soften your features. Trans women are often told that if we want to pass, we have to try our hardest to be petite, soft, have just the right amount of femininity, and not stand out too much. But what if I want to be a different kind of woman? What if I want to look like Grace Jones or Kate Moennig? What if I want to look like Beth Ditto or Dolly Parton? They’re all cis women; don’t they pass?

The moral of “passing” discussions always seems to be:

If you get bashed it will be your fault.

No! Please, don’t!

#every acting award ever #i know a lot of people criticise ten for being whiny and difficult and bratty in this scene #i feel that those who do have pretty much completely missed the entire arc of ten’s character development #of all the new!who doctors he is the most painfully perfectly HUMAN incarnation #nine is the battle-weary scarred alien destroyer of civilisations. #eleven is a dorky alien dude with a penchant for hats and a dark streak the size of an oncoming storm. #not that ten doesn’t have his alien or oncoming storm aspects. he does. but predominantly he is HUMAN. #he was born from sacrificing himself as nine to save rose. he was born BECAUSE of her. #throughout his entire story arc ten delights in humanity. so many times he WANTS to be human. to take that slow path with rose. #at one point he even IS human in the family of blood storyline. #and he is TERRIFIED - as we all would be - of disappearing. of course as a timelord he doesn’t die. #but HE - as ten. as the man who loved rose and martha and donna. - HE won’t exist anymore #of course he rails against it like any human would. he wants to cling on to life. the life he knows. his identity. his humanity. #and this is his reward? oh baby. #so he rants and raves and is sadly startlingly painfully human. and then that last gif. #he pulls himself back. he KNOWS he’s being whiny. he knows that in the bigger scheme of things he still lives.#so he gets on with it. he was born for rose and now he dies for wilf. #he dies for wilf and he dies for DONNA. he’s giving her her granddad back. #and this is why i love ten. always and forever. (via virginiachance)

Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions.

Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time.

In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows:

The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.

In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts. This may sound outrageous, but think about how you react when precocious children dominate the talk at an adult party. As women begin to make inroads into formerly ‘male’ domains such as business and professional contexts, we should not be surprised to find that their contributions are not always perceived positively or even accurately.
